The Commonwealth's Continued Importance

On July 4, 1776, a conglomerate of brilliant philosophers, lawyers, and landowners united to forge perhaps the most important secular document in world history. Fifty-six men etched their names into the precipices of history when they signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. This document established the United States of America at the Second Continental Congress, where the thirteen colonies rejected British rule in the pursuit of self-governance. At Valley Forge, west of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, Pennsylvania played yet another key role in the Revolutionary War. The winter of 1777-1778 served as the turning point in the war for independence. George Washington’s winter encampment displayed the resolve and grit of the American cause. Then westward, Lancaster even served as the United States capital for a day in 1777 as the Continental Congress escaped the British as they besieged Philadelphia.

Outside of politics, Pennsylvania also boasts a huge wealth of resources. As gubernatorial candidate and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity frequently highlights, Pennsylvania sits on trillions of tons of natural gas – in fact, enough natural gas to heat about 115 million homes annually. As recently as 2025, in-state natural gas production increased by 5.1% and new wells by 84%. Thanks to Pennsylvania’s exit from RGGI, these unrealized benefits of power may finally seep into energy production and policy and provide much-needed energy relief for hardworking Pennsylvanians and Americans across the nation.

As seen in both civilian and military matters, Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to dominate policy conversations at all levels. Love it or not, AI will serve as one of the biggest technological flashpoints in most of our lives. U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick highlighted this emerging reality at his AI Summit in Pittsburgh last summer. Yet again, Pennsylvania seems poised to embrace this technology and implement it nationwide. Pennsylvania sits in the top three states for implementing AI in government services. Outside the realm of government, we see companies like Microsoft reopening the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant near Harrisburg to power their data centers. Around 130 data centers currently operate or are planned in the Keystone State. Sources estimate around $100 billion in private investment to flood the state in pursuit of the AI race. Again, while the benefits – or detriments – of this advancement will one day appear, the reality remains that this disruptor will impact all of our lives.

Pennsylvania historically served as a major transportation hub. My hometown of Altoona, once a railroad destination, carried princes, Presidents, and everyday people 24/7. The Pennsylvania Turnpike connects the Midwest and South with New England, ushering through millions of travelers and tourists annually. In 2024, over 200 million people visited Pennsylvania. After all, the “Keystone State” doesn’t come from nothing. Both President Trump and Biden signed different infrastructure bills into law, from which Pennsylvania received billions of federal dollars to repair roads, bridges, and tunnels – yet another example of the focus on this important state.

From the dawn of American Democracy in Philadelphia to trains that transported Union Governors to the War Governors’ Conference during the Civil War, to the coal mined and steel forged to win two world wars, and the future political and technological importance of Pennsylvania, this Commonwealth deserves both praise for its contributions to America during her first 250 years and recognition as a key player in the advancement of the American Dream for the next 250 to come.
